Mt. Pinatubo, located at the tri-boundary of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga, is one of the most renowned and awe-inspiring volcanoes in the Philippines. Its dramatic eruption in 1991 is considered one of the most powerful volcanic events of the 20th century, significantly altering the landscape and impacting the global climate. Today, Mt. Pinatubo offers a captivating adventure for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.
I climbed Mt. Pinatubo on February 24, 2024.
I searched for a travel tour online and found the Lakwatserong Gala page. Luckily, I was able to join their tour. See the link to their Facebook page below:
I called and messaged the contact number on their page. They offer a Mt. Pinatubo tour amounting to Php 3,500.00, inclusive of van transfer from Cavite to Manila.
The nearest pick-up point from my location in Indang, Cavite, is McDonald’s Palapala in Dasmariñas City. Our meet-up time was 11 PM. The van service was right on time for the pick-up. I think there were 10-11 joiners picked up at different locations.
We arrived at the jump-off point around 6 AM. Upon arrival, we ate breakfast at a nearby carinderia. Our tour coordinator instructed us to wait for our names to be called, as they needed to register our names with the Tourism Department to release the gate pass before we could proceed with the 4×4 ride. There are no nearby ATM machines, and there is no Globe signal in the area, only Smart users have coverage.
Reaching Mt. Pinatubo involves a memorable trek that starts with a 4×4 ride. When our names were called, only four persons per 4×4 were allowed. The ride took at least an hour through the scenic lahar-filled valleys. You need to wear a mask or anything that can cover your face because the path is very dusty with lahar, especially when it’s very windy. This off-road adventure offers glimpses of the volcanic landscape’s raw power and the recovery of nature.
There is one stopover along the way: the famous Toblerone Hills. These distinctive hills are named after the popular Swiss chocolate, Toblerone, due to their striking resemblance to the triangular peaks of the chocolate bar. The hills are characterized by sharp, angular ridges that rise dramatically from the surrounding landscape. We stayed for at least 15-30 minutes for picture taking.

After almost an hour, we reached the trailhead, where the real trek begins. The hike to the crater is relatively moderate, taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. The trail is well-maintained and winds through a landscape marked by ash deposits, volcanic rocks, and new vegetation reclaiming the land. Along the way, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
It was 11:30 AM when we reached the crater. The sun’s heat was at its peak, making the trek more exhausting. A large crowd was expected since it was the weekend. But seeing the famous Mt. Pinatubo was definitely worth the effort and time. We stayed there for more than an hour to rest and enjoy the breathtaking view. We took a lot of photos and appreciated the beauty of the surroundings.

We started to descend past 1 PM. There are various stores along the way where you can stop and eat. They offer grilled food, cold drinks, and rice meals at affordable prices.
We reached the jump-off around 3 PM. There are houses around that let you use their bathrooms so you can change and take a bath. It’s up to you how much you want to tip.
