Mt. Tapyas is one of the most popular and accessible tourist attractions in Coron, Palawan. Standing at approximately 210 meters above sea level, it offers a relatively easy climb, making it ideal for beginners and casual hikers alike. The reward? Stunning panoramic views that will leave you in awe.
On December 5, 2024, I had the chance to climb Mt. Tapyas as part of my tour package. My accommodation was at Mountain View Garden Inn, which turned out to be incredibly convenient. The jump-off point to the trail was just a 3-5 minute walk away. Being so close to the town proper, Mt. Tapyas is easily accessible at any time of the day, so you can plan your hike whenever it suits you best.
Here’s a great bonus: there is no entrance fee to climb Mt. Tapyas. The trail is open to the public, and you won’t need any permits or payments to enjoy this adventure. At the base, you’ll find friendly locals offering refreshments, snacks, and even guide services. Supporting them is a wonderful way to contribute to the community.
I started the hike around 4:55 PM. The trail consists of concrete steps—721 of them to be exact. While the height of each step varies, they are wide enough to make the climb comfortable. It’s highly recommended to bring water to stay hydrated, as the ascent can be tiring. Fortunately, there are benches along the way where you can rest, especially at landings between flights of stairs. Motivational markers indicating your progress—such as 100, 300, or 600 steps—are placed along the trail to keep you going. These reminders make you feel closer to the summit with every step.
In less than 30 minutes, I reached the top thanks to my quick pace. Despite it being a weekday, there were plenty of tourists enjoying the climb. At the summit, I was greeted by a panoramic view of Coron Town and its surrounding islands. It’s especially mesmerizing during sunrise or sunset. I was lucky to witness the sunset, which painted the sky in stunning hues—a sight that made the climb absolutely worth it.

One of the most iconic features of Mt. Tapyas is the giant white cross that stands at the summit. Illuminated at night, it serves as a beacon visible from afar, symbolizing hope and faith for many locals. There’s also a large “CORON” sign, which is similarly lit at night and visible from the town below. These landmarks add to the charm and uniqueness of the experience.

The ideal time to climb is during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the stunning views in cooler temperatures.

The climb up and down Mt. Tapyas made me sweat a lot, but the experience was incredibly satisfying. At night, seeing the illuminated cross and “CORON” sign from the summit is truly rewarding. Reaching the top fills you with pride and a sense of accomplishment.
So, I highly recommend including Mt. Tapyas in your Coron itinerary. It’s a must-visit destination that offers a mix of adventure, scenic beauty, and personal achievement. Lace up your shoes, bring your water bottle, and get ready to conquer those steps!
