DIY Macau Trip - Travel Guide and Hacks

March 23, 2026

If you’re planning a DIY trip to Macau, here are some helpful reminders and travel hacks based on my experience:

1. Book flights early.
Booking your flight months in advance can help you score cheaper airfare, especially during airline seat sales. I usually book with Cebu Pacific, as I find Philippine Airlines and AirAsia to be more expensive. This is the site where I booked my flight: https://www.cebupacificair.com/en-PH/

2. Get a Macau Pass at the airport.
You can buy it at 7-Eleven (I purchased mine for 98 MOP without load) and use it for bus fares and some purchases. It makes transportation much easier. During my vacation, I was able to get a keychain-style Macau Pass (with a free black wristband), but it is usually issued as a card.

3. Use the public buses.
Bus fares are affordable (around 6 MOP per ride) and can take you to most tourist spots around Macau.

4. Download Google Maps or offline maps.
This helps a lot when navigating unfamiliar streets, especially if you’re traveling solo. During my DIY trip, I used Google Maps, which helped me monitor the number of bus stops before reaching my destination.

6. Stay in a strategic location.
Choosing accommodation in the Macau Peninsula makes it easier to access many attractions and bus routes. I stayed at Macau Hotel S, a 3-minute walk to a bus stop.

7. Try the famous Macau egg tart.
Don’t miss Lord Stow’s Bakery in Coloane Village—it’s one of the most famous food spots in Macau. I bought a box of Egg Tart (6 pcs) for 65 MOP. It is really delicious.

8. Take advantage of free attractions.
Experiences like the Wynn Palace SkyCab and walking around the Cotai Strip are free but memorable.

9. Book popular experiences in advance.
Activities like the Venetian Gondola Ride or dinner at Macau Tower can easily be booked through platforms like Klook. These are must-do experiences when visiting Macau.

10. Explore early in the morning.
Tourist spots like Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s are less crowded in the morning.

11. Don’t be afraid to travel solo.
Sometimes the best experiences come from navigating a new place on your own and discovering things along the way. 😊
