Elephant Mountain (Taiwan)

August 5, 2024

Difficulty Level: 2/9 (minor climb)

Hike Duration: 1-1.5hours

Location: Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan

Elephant Mountain, known as Xiangshan in Mandarin, is a striking natural feature situated in Taipei, Taiwan. Named for its resemblance to the shape of an elephant, this popular hiking destination is renowned for its breathtaking views and relatively accessible trails.

I climbed Elephant Mountain on March 30, 2024.

As part of my last day in Taiwan, I decided to hike up Elephant Mountain. Based on my research, the view of Taipei 101 from the peak is quite impressive. There is also no registration fee or tour guide required.

The starting point of the trek feels different from hiking in the Philippines because, from start to finish, it consists of concrete steps. Instead of walking on flat or undulating paths, you’ll be climbing steps the entire way. It’s a great morning exercise, going up and down the steps. I encountered many children, elderly people, and fellow tourists along the way. Based on what I read online, it’s safe to visit both during the day and at night since the area is well-lit. Many people come here especially to catch the sunset.

I started the climb around 1:45 PM and reached the peak at 2:35 PM. Upon reaching the summit, I was rewarded with panoramic views of Taipei City. The observation deck provides a stunning vantage point of Taipei’s skyline, including iconic landmarks such as Taipei 101. I took a lot of photos and rested for several minutes before descending.

At the base, there is a massage spa available nearby. There are also stores offering refreshments to cool you down after the hike. An ice cream is a good idea.

Overall, Elephant Mountain is a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of natural beauty and urban vistas in Taipei, offering an accessible adventure with spectacular rewards.
