Hiking Mt. Bucari: Iloilo’s Hidden Pine Forest Haven

During a seminar trip to Iloilo in June 2025, I stayed at Iloilo Grand Hotel right in the heart of the city. With a bit of free time on my hands, I found myself craving an outdoor escape. Something quiet, cool, and refreshing—ideally a mountain to hike. I started searching online, but most of the suggested places were several hours away. One option, for instance, was in Igbaras, which was over six hours from my hotel. That was too far for my limited time.

So I asked ChatGPT for help, and it recommended Mt. Bucari, a scenic pine-covered area located in Leon, Iloilo, just over an hour’s drive from the city. Intrigued by its nickname—“Iloilo’s Little Baguio”—I decided to go for it. Nature, pine trees, and fresh mountain air? Exactly what I needed.

Getting There

I left my hotel a little after 7:00 AM and drove to Bucari via private transport. The drive took just over an hour, passing through peaceful countryside roads and small towns until finally arriving at Barangay Bucari, a highland village known for its crisp air and pine forests.

Bucari is not just a single peak—it’s part of a broader eco-tourism zone famous for hiking trails, vegetable farms, waterfalls, and pine tree campsites. The whole area gives off that cool-climate vibe that’s rare in most parts of the Philippines, especially in the Visayas.

Arrival and First Impressions

I arrived around 9:00 AM and parked near the tourist registration area. I paid a minimal registration (30pesos) and environmental fee (50pesos) —a small amount for the maintenance of the area. While they offer tour guides, I opted to hike alone since the trail was reported to be well-marked and beginner-friendly. Locals assured me that the path was easy to follow.

The climate at the base was already refreshing, and I initially wore a jacket. But only a few steps into the hike, I started feeling warm and had to take it off. That’s the beauty of mountain hikes—you start cold, warm up quickly, and end up sweating with a smile on your face.

Starting the Hike

The trail began with concrete steps that ascended gently—perfect for warming up. It wasn’t too steep at first, and the air was clean and cool. Along the way, I passed by the 14 Stations of the Cross, which made me think this place must be a pilgrimage site during Holy Week. Benches were available along the trail, allowing hikers to pause, rest, and catch their breath.

As I climbed higher, the path gradually steepened. The steps became more spaced out, and I found myself stopping more often—not because I was tired, but because I wanted to take everything in. The trail was surrounded by towering trees, chirping birds, and the occasional breeze that rustled through the pine branches.

The “I ❤️ Bucari” Viewpoint

After about 30 minutes, I reached the “I ❤️ Bucari” sign—a popular photo spot with an expansive view of the mountains and valleys below. The scene was stunning, with layers of green hills fading into the horizon. I took some time to snap photos and record a few videos before continuing upward.

From this point onward, the trail changed. The concrete path ended, and the natural trail began—bare earth and tree roots, uneven and more challenging, but still manageable.

Crossing the Pine Tree Bridge

One unique feature along the trail was a reinforced tree trunk bridge—a long fallen tree that had been repurposed into a footbridge with railings. It slanted slightly and required caution, but walking across it was part of the adventure. I held onto the handrails and made my way across slowly, taking pictures and appreciating the creative way nature and human ingenuity had blended here.

Spiritual Touchpoints and Romantic Spots

Not far from the bridge was a quiet spot filled with statues of saints, a wishing well, and a candle area where visitors could offer prayers and make wishes. There was also a “love lock” wall, similar to those found in Paris or Seoul, where couples could attach padlocks to symbolize their bond.

These thoughtful touches gave the place a serene and romantic ambiance. It wasn’t just about hiking—it was about pausing, reflecting, and connecting with something deeper.

The Summit: Rock Formations and Panoramic Views

The final leg of the hike involved ascending a rocky portion of the trail. The stones were sharp and slightly slippery, so I took extra care with my footing. At the summit, a rocky outcrop offered the best panoramic view of the entire Bucari mountain range.

And wow—what a view.

Rolling hills stretched out as far as the eye could see, lined with forests and small farmlands. The air was pure and cool. The sky was clear. It felt like I had stepped into a postcard.

I took my time soaking it all in, snapping photos from different angles and just letting nature speak to my soul. After a few minutes of silence, I made my way down, taking a different route that eventually merged with the original trail.

Trail Duration and Facilities

The entire hike, including rest stops and photo breaks, took me about two hours. It was a good balance of challenge and relaxation—not too intense, but enough to make me sweat and feel accomplished.

Near the registration area at the base, there’s a large open ground under pine trees, perfect for picnicking or just resting. This area also has clean toilet facilities for both men and women, which is always a welcome sight after a long trek.

Why You Should Visit Bucari

If you’re in Iloilo and looking for an accessible nature escape, I highly recommend Bucari. Whether you’re a solo traveler like me, a couple seeking a romantic spot, or a family wanting a nature day trip, Bucari has something to offer. Its pine forests, gentle hiking trails, and serene atmosphere make it a perfect day hike destination.

Here are some final tips if you’re planning a Bucari trip:

💡 Tips for Visiting Mt. Bucari:

  • Start early – The earlier you begin, the better the weather and lighting for photos.
  • Bring water and light snacks – There are limited vendors on the trail.
  • Wear proper footwear – Some parts of the trail are rocky or slippery.
  • Dress in layers – It starts off cold but gets warm as you hike.
  • Take your time – This isn’t a race. Pause, breathe, and enjoy the view.
  • Support locals – If you have extra time, consider hiring a guide or buying from small stores nearby.
  • Leave no trace – Keep Bucari clean and beautiful for everyone.

Final Thoughts

My hike in Mt. Bucari wasn’t just a physical adventure—it was a soulful one. Amid the pine trees and mountain air, I found stillness, clarity, and gratitude. Sometimes, the best experiences are not the most popular ones—they’re the ones you take a chance on, like a quiet mountain town you’ve never heard of, discovered in a conversation or a random search.

So if you ever find yourself in Iloilo with a few hours to spare, don’t miss this hidden gem in the highlands. Mt. Bucari is calling.
